Mass Society and Scarcity

Mass Society isn’t a new idea. Several philosophers and writers in the past centuries argued a lot around this concept.

The modern idea of a homogenous society was developed by Tocqueville in the 19th century, the concept of mass was firstly introduced by José Ortega y Gasset in his oeuvre “Revolt of the Masses” (1929) where he introduced the concept of mass men and then by Karl Mannheim who elaborated the expression mass society.

Culturally speaking, mass society is characterized by uniformity in tastes. Thanks to the growing individual wealth and mass production capabilities, mass society became, in the last part of the 20th century, a consumer society where everything is not only equal and uniform but it is also produced in infinite quantities.

Just few sectors resisted to this consumer revolution. One of them was the Fine Art Industry, where every single oeuvre is (almost unique) and non fungible.

Fine Art has also an important difference from other industries. Artworks are made (up to now) by women and men, that they have a limited timespan. So, we understand that, when for example Picasso died, no other painting could be done by him, transforming every single one of his works in a unique good.

This is the reason why Fine Art is so expensive. Because it is finite and scarce.

But not all that glitters is gold. Fine Art being so expensive, excludes the majority of people to invest in. It is a market niche.

As Startuppers, we think that we could improve this ecosystem through the blockchain technology and in particular through Non Fungible Tokens.

For every single oeuvre we would create at least 6 Non Fungible Tokens, each one correlated to a single and unique part of the selected artwork.

On one hand we will democratize the Fine Art Industry letting everyone to take part in this unique and amazing world, on the other we want to preserve the Uniqueness and the Non Fungibility Feature of the Fine Art Industry which makes it so special.

In fact, every single Token will be Non Fungible meaning that the #3 Token will be different from the nr. #4. Every single token will be unique and not interchangeable.

Every single Token, also, will correspond to a specific and unique part of the correlated artwork.

#3 Token will correspond to a unique part of the oeuvre, different from all the others.

We are going to create the Uniqueness in the Unique.

Stay tuned!
